Top Travel Tips
( Brought to you by RBC Insurance )
No matter where you choose to vacation, having fun is a top priority. And while this is important, RBC Insurance has some tips to help travellers stay safe and healthy during their trip.
- Make sure your passport is current and you have your tickets, documents and identification with you when you arrive at the airport. Make copies of the identification page of your passport. Carry one copy with you, separate from your passport, and leave one with family or friends at home.
- Never leave the country without medical insurance. Carry proof of medical and travel insurance with you and be sure to also leave the policy number and other insurance information, such as the insurance company’s name and phone number, with family and friends at home. Remember that medical treatment abroad can be very expensive and government health insurance plans will only cover a part of these costs, at best. Also, remember that travel arrangements are often non-refundable and purchasing cancellation and interruption insurance can help ensure that you don’t lose your travel investment if you have to cancel your trip, come home early, or stay later at your destination.
- Leave information about where you’ll be staying with family or friends. Keep them informed of any changes.
- Try not to keep your credit cards, travellers’ cheques, passport and other identification in the same place. That way, if your wallet is lost or stolen, you won’t be left without identification or money. Take advantage of your hotel’s safety deposit box for valuables.
- Remember that drinking the water in some other countries can be unsafe. To help avoid illness, drink only beverages made from purified water.
- Be aware of any health issues in the area you’re visiting. Don’t forget to get all necessary vaccinations before you leave home. It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about these issues at least a couple of months before your trip.
- Let your neighbours know you’ll be going on vacation so they can keep an eye on your home. Have them pick up any mail or newspapers and, if possible, park a car in your driveway.
- Check to see if any advisories or warnings have been issued for the country where you’ll be travelling. This information can be obtained from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, at 1-800-267-6788 or www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca.
- Remember that airport line-ups can be lengthy and a minimum of two hours is usually required for check-in, so arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare to ensure you have time to get through security and shop duty-free. Make sure you don’t have sharp objects in your carry-on luggage.
- To counteract jet lag, avoid too many alcoholic beverages before flying and while on the plane. Drink water instead and try to walk while in the aircraft.
- Most importantly, have fun!
